Welcome One and All to The Broke B*tch's Business Guide!

Welcome to The Broke B*tch's Business Guide! Adventures in starting a small business with me, your favourite broke ass beginner business owner! On this blog, you'll get my very best tips and tricks for starting your business on a budget, as I bumble my way through starting my very own crafting business (on a pretty tight budget).

Firstly, allow me to introduce myself.

My name's Michaela and I'm a recent art school graduate based in Melbourne, Australia. I'm currently trying to break into the wonderful world of making money from arts and crafts by starting my very own business!

I worked a series of admin jobs while studying and post-graduation, and have since had several contract alterations, cuts to my hours and have been underpaid so much at times that it may as well be a competition of who can pay me the least... so needless to say after essentially losing my current job, I have become disillusioned with the idea of working for others, and have since found satisfaction (with the help of copious amounts of therapy and venting to friends and family) with working for myself.

Sure, it comes with it's ups and downs, and I'm only just starting out so it's definitely more downs than ups right now; but you know what never fails to make me feel better? Sharing my feelings with others and helping them with pearls of wisdom gained from my own experiences!

Oh, you want to know what my business is?? I thought you'd never ask!

I am the proud owner, head designer, head printer and social media manager of The Ugly Mug Co. That's right, I'm using my hard-earned arts degree to design and print quirky coffee mugs! Aren't you proud, mum and dad??

(shameless plug, but you can find me on Instagram @the_ugly_mugco_ and on Etsy at TheUglyMugCoStore).

You can also find my designer drinkware at IN.CUBE8R Melbourne Central, a wonderful community of artists designing and selling their wares out of the cutest little hole-in-the-wall store!

But enough about me! Let's continue the introduction of this blog!

Now, I just want to preface by saying that I am no business expert.

I do not know how to get you 500 sales a day on your Etsy page, I'm still learning how to work a spreadsheet and manage finances (shoutout to my financially-literate sister for all her help) and although my Instagram page is looking kind of beefy at the moment, I still have no idea how the algorithm works!

This blog is a culmination of all the tips I wish someone gave me when I was starting my business.

All the little bits 'n' pieces and ways I've been able to save money and make my business POP! Basically, it's all the answers to all those Google searches I've done at 3AM on topics like 'what are the cheapest markets to apply for in Melbourne'  or 'how to make a marketstall look good for only $100' that I've had to come up with on my own.

I'll also be sharing tips on what I've learned while learning how to sublimate dinkware, and some of the best resources I've found on how to become a sublimation pro!

If you like saving money, arts and crafts and light-hearted anecdotes, as well as unapologetically raw and honest content, then you're in the right place.

Join me on my quest to grow my little passion project business on a budget! Strap yourself in, because it's gonna be a bumpy ride!
